We have entered a time period in which alternative approaches to providing amplification to patients are being proposed. Sensorineural hearing loss is a change in a complex physiological system, and the reaction to amplified sound varies significantly from person to person. The professional fills that viral role of making sure that the patient has the best opportunity to get the most out of the newly fit devices.  Alternative fitting models that do not include direct involvement of professionals pose a significant risk to patient benefit and patient satisfaction.

Join AOA and Don Schum of Oticon to discuss the value of well-trained audiologists and other hearing care professionals and the benefits for their patients.

Educational Objectives:
1. Recognize the complex nature of the change in the auditory system faced by most adults with hearing loss
2. Understand how individual variability will affect the perception of amplified sound
3. Learn the aspects of the fitting process that require professional administration, interpretation and oversight in order to maximize patient satisfaction and benefit
4. Review the benefits of properly fit advanced technology hearing devices compared to entry level or starter devices

Speaker:

Donald J. Schum, PhD, currently serves as Vice President for Audiology & Professional Relations for Oticon, Inc.  Previous to his position at Oticon in Somerset, Don served as the Director of Audiology for the main Oticon office in Copenhagen Denmark and also held appointments at the University of Iowa, School of Medicine and at the Medical University of South Carolina.
