NEWS & ASSOCIATION UPDATES

AMA, Regenstrief Launch EHR Training Platform for Medical Students

Source: Healthcare IT News

The American Medical Association on Wednesday announced a partnership with the Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University School of Medicine to launch an electronic health record training program for medical students. Too many medical students enter residency "without the ability to effectively and efficiently use EHRs," said Susan Skochelak, MD, the AMA's group vice president for medical education. "This is comparable to a physician graduating from medical school without learning how to properly use a stethoscope." Through the partnership with the AMA, the Regenstrief EHR Clinical Learning Platform will be put to work at medical schools nationwide. The platform, billed as the first of its kind, uses actual data from patients at Indianapolis-based Eskenazi Health, enabling students to more realistically care for virtual patients as they familiarize themselves with the workflows of the EHR. "We use a sophisticated set of algorithms to remove or misidentify personal identifiers to protect identities," said Blaine Takesue, MD, Regenstrief research scientist and assistant professor of clinical medicine at IU School of Medicine, on a conference call announcing the platform. What's Behind 2.5 Million New Health Jobs?

Source: Health Affairs

December 2007 marked the start of the most severe recession in modern times. For more than two years, the economy shed jobs. By the start of 2010, there were 8.6 million fewer jobs than at the start of the recession. These losses would have been greater had health care employment not continued to grow; jobs outside healthcare fell by 9.2 million while healthcare added nearly 600 thousand jobs. It took until November 2014 for non-health jobs to return to their pre-recession level, at which point health jobs had grown by 1.7 million. As of January 2017, there are 2.5 million more health jobs than at the start of the recession, an increase of 19 percent over a nine-year period during which the U.S. population grew by only 7 percent. While health jobs make up about 11 percent of total jobs, they have accounted for 35 percent of the jobs added since the start of the recession. Affect vs. Effect

Source: Grammar Girl

Most of the time "affect" is a verb and "effect" is a noun, but there are exceptions. We have an example, a memory trick, and a cartoon to help you remember when to use "affect" or "effect." I get asked whether to use affect or effect all the time, and it is by far the most requested grammar topic, so I have a few memory tricks to help you remember. Learn how to differentiate between these two words on QuickAndDirtyTips.com.

MANAGER'S MINUTE

Keep Your Remote Workers Engaged!
Gallup reports that approximately 37% of today’s workforce works remotely. And, if “engaged” by their management, they feel just as if not more valued than a traditional office worker. What should you do for your remote workers?

  • Make sure everyone knows they are a part of the team.
  • Establish a time and method for regular check-ins.
  • Focus on what your remote workers are achieving, not when they are working (unless you have mandated required working hours).
  • Get to know your remote employees so you can interact personally with them.
  • Schedule regular face-to-face meetings. You can use Skype but you need in-person meetings periodically as well.
